HI there,

I'm looking for a nice wooden desk. Is it a double-pedestal? Can you describe the drawer configuration on it? Would you mind hanging on to it until I can get there (next week or so) to look at it, and a little longer until I get a house to put it in?

Hi, all. I'm looking to get rid of an interesting piece of furniture. While it's not medieval, it is potentially wonderful for someone who has the woodworking skills to restore it, which I don't.

It's so cool I've been unable to throw it out for two moves now, and I just need the space too badly to hang onto it for another decade ...so it is available free for anyone who can give it a loving home, and that includes non-SCA folks you migth know.

It was originally a stunning desk in the empire (early 20th cent) style. It's that deep red-black mahogony popular up until the 30's, that almost looks like stained leather. The key element that made me buy it, and has kept me from getting rid of it, is that the two front legs are beautifully carved like egyptian architectural columns at the top, and end in many-toed clawed feet at the bottom. Those are in prety good condition, and are quite unique. There are five small drawers with the original deco style crystal knobs, large crystals that are quite dramatic against the dark wood. Really a potentiallyl pretty piece, with a little refinishing, so much so that when I sold off the rest of my antique furniture i could not bring myself to part with it.

Now for the damage: The veneer has come off from the rectangular support beams between the legs; I wasn't plannign to replace that, just strip it off and stain the wood to match. Easy job. More heartbreaking, someone tore out a section of wood on the top of the desk, near the back, which means one would either have to provide a new layer of wood for the top, , or provide a book shelf, secretary unit, bookcase, etc, to sit on the back 12" of the desk and cover the damaged spot. Or I guess you could piece in a strip along the back and leave the front section original.

So...I'm posting this here because it's the one group I know with lots of people who like cool quirky stuff and have the woodworking skills to deal with this. I have no use for it, but I can't bear to throw it out. Is there anyone (or a friend of anyone) who would like to give it a loving home? Or salvage the legs and do something with them? I'm looking for any good excuse t give it away. :-)
