Greetings!

Sudentorre Arts and Sciences classes on Tuesday nights this month in
April: Arts and Sciences classes will be about Middle Eastern garb:
what they wore. These two classes will focus on Middle Eastern and
Western Asian clothes - mostly on Women's garb, though you guys will get
a taste of Turkic textiles - cause that's what I have.

An integral part of the tribal (NOT belly dance tribal, mind you)
textiles is weave, and embroidery patterrns. I have lots of examples of
traditional (if contemporarily-made) regional textiles for women to
share. If you have garb pieces to share bring them fow show-and-tell.
Enrich our experience!

Tuesday April 15th = Garb examples, a discussion on textiles and
embellishment, cut and colors. The second half of the class will focus
on Persian and Ottoman clothing in preparation for patterning a Turkish
etuk or a Gawazee coat. The Gawazee as we know it is LATE period, but
it is a good versatile piece of garb to have - especially if you are
interested in SCA Middle Eastern dance. Men - I will have Turkic
examples and pictures and since men's and women's salwars (pants) are
mostly the same cut - you can come too. We will start laying out and
creating a pattern for you to wear.

Tuesday, April 22nd = We will continue the previous class. This class
will focus on cutting, piecing, and fitting the Turkish/Persian women's
coat, and discuss undergarments. Guys - continuing on to the tunic and
finishing pants. Here is where I will show some advanced garb options -
embellishment. As I said, embellishment is an integral part of Middle
Eastern and Western Asian and Eastern European culture.

Fabric options:
Guys - bring 3 yards of a light to medium weight fabric for pants. (see
below if you want to make a coat for your lady).
Ladies - bring 5 to 6.5 yards (45 inches wide) of a medium weight
material for the coat. DO NOT bring upholstery fabric (unless it is
very light weight ans washed several times)! You will be less than
pleased with the results.

Classes are held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Fredericksburg at the Campus
Christian Center next to Mary Washington College. During the school year
when the CCC Board is having their meeting in the main room (usually the
third Teusday) we meet int he basement and watch movies.

See you Tuesday!
