[Moo] Axe

QUIBBLE: *anything* can be a thrown weapon -- the SCA just tends to
have standardized on knife, axe, and spear/javelin. (I have taught /
demonstrated the use of the thrown stick from time to time since AS XIV
or thereabouts ... and will note the rather effective implementation of
thrown maces/hammers at this year's Gulf Wars, according to my
informants.)

A "proper" adze can have a handle proportionate to the size and weight
of head, just like any axe, and there is wide variation in width and
shape of the sharpened blade as well. Broadaxe or broadadze had their
place in the toolchest just as much as their narrower cousins, and adze
with "shaped" blades were used to produce special shapes. The
"hammer"-backing of the head was often used as the impact point for
driving an adze through material -- useful make-your-own shingles or
shaping a post/timber already in-place..

When the rabble were roused and the peasantry / crafts-folk called into
formal combattant service, carpenters and such would usually be expected
to bring their tools of the trade with them. A pound or two of good
sharpened metal at the end of a couple of feet of haft that is already
fairly well-balanced makes for a pretty devastating piece of throwable
destruction.

I like either that or "adze". However, an adze doesn't look like an axe.
It's blade is set at a right angle to the haft. Think hoe with a sharp
blade and a shorter handle. It is used for shaping wood - not a thrown
weapon.
