It really depends on how much accuracy you want from the measurements.   When I used to survey (back in the 80s before all the high-tech gadgets they use nowadays) we took off our watches, rings...even our glasses when we didn't need them...to ensure the most accurate reading possible.  I could not imagine trying to get any kind of accurate measurement wearing any significant amount of metal...or having it with a few meters of my location.

Hey, here's a stupid question from a non-combattant...if you are wearing steel armor and attempt to use a magnetic compass, I assume it will not work?  Or is that not enough interference to matter? Inquiring minds need to know (for sure)
