[Moo] ISO: Lute knowledge

Hello everyone!

I am interested in learning an instrument upon which I can accompany myself
as I sing.

The lute was one option that I have come up with that was around in Venice,
Italy in the late 16th century.

Do we have anyone in the area who plays or has good (ie: scholarly)
resources for information on the types of lutes available then vs. the types
we have now. Or who knows of a good beginner's lute, so I know how much I'm
going to have to save up (~$500 from what I can see, if not $600). Is there
a less expensive alternative for someone who is just learning... like
funny-tuning your guitar or something? :-p

Anyway, please drop me a note if you have any info or please pass this on to
anyone that you think could help!

Thanks,

Simona dell'Amore

PS: My apologies to those of you who receive this more than once.
