[Moo] newcomers handbook

Jonathan - This is something that the chatelaines office is working on.

Also, the heralds handbook as a lot of this information in it. Unfortunately it seems to be only the in the hands of Heralds. :)

Maybe I need to dust off my OP, heraldry, protocol, scribaly stuff classes and start teaching them again. Would anyone in the Barony be interested in attending these?

This brings up something I've stated in multiple kingdoms now.

There really needs to be an updated "newbie" handbook that pertains to the actual kingdom level. Technically I guess you have the known world handbook on an SCA scale. But that's really not a newbie handbook, and kingdoms differ greatly in many instances that a generalised handbook would not work.

As pointed out from previous emails, some people don't know some of this very basic stuff/where to find it. Some of this information may be common knowledge for vets of this kingdom or SCA in general, but to some newbies or people from other kingdoms, this may not be common knowledge.

I've also heard a lot of people ask some basic questions like "what's this order for?" And most commonly "how do you get an award?"

Opinions, criticism, ideas?

Thank you Richard. This will be very helpful. When I was looking for this info, I did go the Kingdom website with the link listed of the Baronial website, but it was to the main Kingdom listing.

As of an hour ago, I never knew the Baronial info was also listed on the Kingdom website.

I've made a note to add this to the website tonight. If there are other suggestions for useful links please send them to webminister at stierbach.org<mailto:webminister at stierbach.org>

I know this now, but this info would have been helpful several months ago when I was looking for info on an award. I could not find any info on the Baronial Website on Baronial Awards. If a link had been placed on the Baronial Website, then this conversation would not be taking place.

All awards ever given out by the current and past Baronage are found on the kingdom OP site. You can search by B&B term or award given. There is a description of what the award is for as well.

In addition, if you think someone should have an award look at their OP on the kingdom website. All awards given to that person will be listed there no matter if it was baronial, Atlantian, or another kingdom.

When the Baronial OP link went away, so did the list of Baronial Awards for various activities. The OP has been outdated by several years, but you could at least find a definition of each of the Baronial awards.

So, if you want to recommend someone for an award, there is no listing to show what awards Stierbach has.

I never said it was on the Stierbach website. I don't know about how it was set up before I started playing and paying attention to these things, but at one point there was a link on the baronial website to the baronial OP, which was hosted on a personal website. That website became unavailable or inaccessible or somesuch (I don't know the details) a few years ago and so the webminister removed the link at some point, since there wasn't much use in keeping a broken link. Since then the example text and the badge images have been unavailable online. Again, that's as far as I know --- someone else may have started hosting the images, but I haven't come across them.

For the most part, the Atlantian OP has covered the information that used to be on the Stierbach OP, with the exception of the Stierbach-specific badge images and blazoning and the award text examples, and has mostly done a good job of keeping things up to date. Given that, and as far as I know, Stierbach hasn't needed to recreate what used to be on that personal website because the most important information is being maintained by the Kingdom.

Why was it taken off the baronial website to begin with if we had information on it?

Miriel,

As someone who used to do a fair number of baronial scrolls early in my SCA participation, I think your project would be very useful. I applaud you for taking it on. There's no reason we can't have our own litte book.

It was a lot easier to get to Baronial scroll information when it was on the Stierbach website. Now you have to dig for it on the Atlantia site. If someone is a newbie, it would be discouraging.

I will check my old scroll information to see if I have alternate wording for Baronial scrolls.

The reasons this project seemed like a good idea when I proposed it:

1. The award badge images only seem to be available through a scribal version of word of mouth and even the blazonings are buried in the O and A.

2. I have exactly one award text verbage for each award, most of which have notations indicating they were approved by Mika and Ursula. These used to be available on Enequy's website that held the Baronial OP.

3. I'm hosting a scriptorium that wants to help with court dockets, scroll backlogs, and several other projects, but the bulk of the participants are just starting out or for some other reason are uncomfortable with entirely improvising award text, much less doing that for every single scroll.

One easy-to-acquire document, containing all that information and tailored specifically to our barony, in a familiar format and in a central location seemed like an ideal solution. I saw a need, so I tried to fill it. I apologize that my desire to help has apparently caused some offense or confusion. I would still like to see the project through, even if it will never be well received by the barony at large.

I like that there is not set text so that awards can be more personalize, less cookie cutter. That way everyone's scrolls can be tailored to them.

Like you said previously, variety keeps court more interesting.
