<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>2 would be wrongful and unnecessary.
</FONT><FONT face=Arial size=2>If we teach the history of something, it should
include all points of that history, even if we will not replicate them
all. This is not like giving someone a gun and fearing that they would use
it even if they knew what it was; a student is surely capable of dealing with a
concept like "this existed, but due to SCA restructions onlyi Knights can wear
something like this." First, the learning experience should be about
more than SCA garb. Second, some fo your people may be Knights, or become
Knights, or make gifts for knights. ...so it is not irrelevant to all
of them anyway. </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I'll leave the Knights to comment upon what is or
is not a "restricted chain", though I believe it has to be plain, ie not
with something hanging from it. however, the comment about
avoiding chains that are "too fancy" for this reason I do not agree with.
There are many, many opulent and fancy chain necklaces in period that are
nothing like chains of state. To remove all of those from one's costuming
lexicon just because less-educated people might get them confused (which
is what was suggested to you here, really) does ill service to the SCA at
large. It's not like we really live in the 16th century and someone
mistakes your necklace you might be handed a secret missive from the Queen that
could destroy all of England. If someone things you are wearing something
you are not, smile and give them better information. "Isn't that a chain
of state?" "No, actually it's based upon a very interesting portrait
of XXXXX"...you get the picture. </FONT></DIV>

<DIV style="FONT: 10pt arial"><B>Subject:</B> [Moo] Please Help me make an
informed choice for a class at Pennsic</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial color=#0000ff size=2><SPAN class=906523814-13062007>I am
in search of opinions. I am teaching classes on period beading and
jewelry at Pennsic this year but have run into a problem. there is a
great number of fashions that only have chains as the jewelry
adornment. </SPAN></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial color=#0000ff size=2><SPAN

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>I have a mission that
perhaps I can get some help with here as well. First, let me say, I Know
The SCA Policy On Wearing Large (Knightly) Chains and variations in various
kingdoms (so please don't re-explain them to me instead help me make an
informed decision.) One of the most popular period style jewelry are
large chains made different ways, typically unadorned. However, that is
reserved for the KSCA and I respect that. It is hard to teach jewelry
without touching on chains. I have asked friends from around the known
world how to approach this and have received many answers.
</FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff></FONT></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>The most popular ones are:
</FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>1) teach it correctly but
make sure that everyone understands the SCA rules.
</FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>2) Don't teach chains at
all. </FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>3) If the chain has a pendent
on it or some other adornment it is ok to wear it. </FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>4) If a person is wearing
multiple chains like many of the German people in the 1520s - 1540s it is ok
because it is not a single chain. </FONT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT color=#0000ff>5) Beware that the chain is
not too plain for the KSCA and not too fancy that it would become confused
with a great chain of state. </FONT></DIV>

me make an informed decision so I don't confuse someone and get them into
trouble. I fear that if a person is a beginning or would be jeweler they
will find these paintings and then may simply do something. I feel it is
far better to head that off if at all possible.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
