Broadaxe or broadadze had their place in the toolchest just as much as their narrower cousins, and adze with "shaped" blades were used to produce special shapes. The "hammer"-backing of the head was often used as the impact point for driving an adze through material -- useful make-your-own shingles or shaping a post/timber already in-place..</font></span></div>

A pound or two of good sharpened metal at the end of a couple of feet of haft that is already fairly well-balanced makes for a pretty devastating piece of throwable destruction.</font></span></div>

<div>I like either that or "adze". However, an adze doesn't look like an axe. It's blade is set at a right angle to the haft. Think hoe with a sharp blade and a shorter handle. It is used for shaping wood - not a thrown weapon. </div>
