I quilted my own helmet liners as well as made a few for friends..... Fuseable fleece is a wonderful invention..... If you want to go more period, bring a bag, the harses are shedding now.....

I put the same question out on the Armour Archive last night. I got a few replies, one even from the guy that sells them at Gulf Wars, though he might be bias. I don't know that you need to buy them so that I have a local review too. :)
