[Moo] Asking the obvious

Well, I'll confess I didn't read the answers until I saw the apology for profanity, and then I was so curious about how a compass query could lead to swearing, I had to read them all!

This leads me to ask what is probably an equally obvious question.

The basic workings of a compass is a bit of free-floating iron that aims itself to the poles based on the magnetic field surrounding the Earth, yes? Presumably, Celia's story is not set in a super-technological place where her character would rather have a GPS, so her compass is probably pretty simple. So, unless she's wearing magnetized armor, why would it make a significant difference? Why wouldn't a compass still be "close enough" to get the character out of the forest?

Apologies to all for the profanity on the list. Sorry
