It will probably be enough to get you generally in the direction, but
the close proximity of the iron will cause it to be off.  Any iron is
at least somewhat magnetic, it doesnt have to be fully magnetized.  In
my home state there is a place called Lyon mountain, it was an iron
mine years ago, since closed down.  If you are anywhere near there at
all, compasses aren't worth much unless you want to know where the
mountain is.
