Greetings to the Group,

This email has nothing to do with the SCA, just so you know up front. It does have to do with an ongoing struggle in my neighborhood with Wal-Mart.

For those of you who don't know, I live 3 miles from Wilderness Battlefield (what is left of it) and the corner of Rtes 3 and 20. Wal-mart wants to build a 140,000 square foot bldg there and be the anchor point for a shopping complex larger than Central Park eventually spreading over 1,000 acres.

That is not the problem. In fact most people here would welcome having some stores in their area, in the already zoned commercial property that starts ½ a mile down the road from where they want to build right off of Rte 3. However, that land is not what Wal-mart wants. There are several petitions going right now, and so far Wal-mart has said there is no legal reason for them to move and construction will begin this fall.

Yesterday in the house, representatives from Vermont and Texas spoke out about this and have been moving legislation thought their states to try and stop this building. Vermont and Texas lost significant numbers of men in the Wilderness campaign, and the proposed site of the store is on the land these men camped and died.
